Dr. Kimmel has dared to expose the full range of punishments that many adults think are perfectly “reasonable.” He challenges them by revealing their true impact on children. He gives us a valuable historical perspective on “punishment” and how various punishments evolved through civilization; but punishment by no means makes us civilized. To the contrary, he exposes the true etiology of punishment – continuing the past and getting back at others for what was done to them. He also profoundly dares to point out that it evolves from a distrust and a dislike for children. Such truth! And I love how he points out his consternation about people who truly love children but insist on punishing them. He gives us such food for thought, which has the potential to change the treatment of children. Thank you for sharing this extremely thought-provoking essay. I will read it over and over so that I’m ready to challenge those who insist we must “punish” children to raise decent adults. And by doing so, I’ll be ready for the next challenging discussion on this controversial topic!

Punishing children is part of a belief system that enables us to live with the reality that our military tortures prisoners, and other atrocities that are rationalized. Striking/hurting a young child is the ultimate expression of cowardice. Not being able or willing to look at our own issues as adults and then parlaying that fear, ignorance, and pain onto a young child bespeaks the worst of which w are capable. Harming our offspring because we don’t want to examine what triggers us and why is a dismal example of human behavior.

I love Mr. Kimmel’s article. As a teacher I’ve heard many parents say “I was spanked and I turned out okay”, or “the Bible says I have to physically discipline my child”. The fact is many people who were spanked as children learn to equate love with pain and fear, and if we read the Bible thoroughly, we find that it says many things that we now respectfully consider passe’ such as women wearing veils in church, slavery etc… We are thinking, reasoning, human beings that need to evolve away from our animal instincts.

I totally agree. Parents who punish and abuse their children were almost always punished and abused by their own parents (or another adult). This is how the cycle of violence gets passed down from generation to generation.

this was really easy to read and to understand, and echos what i have been saying for years. as a survivor who has been able to work on my childhood, i have ben able to get passed most of the training my parents gave me, and have had to spend my whole adult life recovering from the 1st 17yrs of my life.
